The KOOKverse: Our Favorite Kooks Around the World

The KOOKverse: Our Favorite Kooks Around the World

We may have KOOK in our name, but we’re not the only ones flying the freak flag in the best way. Across the globe, other “Kooks” are brewing coffee, shaping boards, building surf camps, and capturing the salt-sprayed magic we live for. Here are the ones we love the most:

☕ Kooks Coffee (Haleʻiwa, Hawai‘i)

What they do: Organic espresso, sunrise smoothies, and the best vibes on O‘ahu’s North Shore.

Why we love them: This tiny coffee shack is a pre-surf ritual for the Salt Squad. Cool locals, classic tunes, and an additional post-surf fuel-up just hits different.

🏄 Spooked Kooks (Australia)

Who they are: Eco-conscious surfboards and soft-tops built from recycled plastic waste with a spooky-cool vibe that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Why we love them: Think: high-performance gear with a punk twist and a major sustainability mission. They’re bold, sustainable, and unapologetically different - just like us.

🏄 Dead Kooks Shonan (Shōnan, Japan)

What they do: A local outpost of the cult Australian surfboard label Dead Kooks, located in Japan’s coastal surf haven.

Why we love them: East meets West with serious style. Dead Kooks boards are art you can ride—hand-shaped, culture-soaked, and totally drool-worthy. The Shonan shop adds its own layer of local surf culture and design love.

🎶 The Kooks (UK)

What they do: Indie rock legends and certified surf playlist staples since 2006.

Why we love them: Their music is sunshine and sea spray in sonic form. Cue them up for golden hour drives and post-surf wind-downs.

🌴 Kooks Café Popoyo (Popoyo, Nicaragua)

What they do: A laid-back beach café steps from Popoyo’s world-class breaks—serving up killer brunch, good tunes, and even better company.

Why we love them: It's the kind of place where you roll in barefoot, linger after your smoothie bowl, and start planning your next surf trip mid-convo. The community is tight, the sunsets are better, and yes—everyone’s a bit of a kook in the best way.

🏄 Kookamonga Surf Shop (Rancho Cucamonga, CA)

What they do: This shop specializes in buying, selling, and trading vintage surfboards.

Why we love them: They bring authentic surf culture to the heart of the Inland Empire. Their passion for vintage surfboards and commitment to the surfing community make them a standout destination for those seeking a piece of surfing history.

📸 Kook Photography (Lombok, Indonesia)

What they do: Capture the essence of surf culture in Lombok, Indonesia, through stunning imagery that showcases the island's vibrant surf scene and natural beauty.

Why we love them: Their photography not only highlights the thrill of surfing but also tells the stories of the people and places, authentic moments, and the natural environment that make Lombok's surf culture unique.

🐚  LA KOOKY SURFER GIRLS (Los Angeles, California)

What they do: A hilariously chaotic IG account celebrating the beautifully bizarre energy of LA’s surfer girls — vintage lewks, cursed-core wetsuits, offbeat behavior, and unfiltered boardwalk glamour.

Why we love them: It’s campy, chaotic, and totally on-brand. They’re capturing the myth and madness of LA surf culture in a way that feels like performance art and a fever dream all at once. A true kooky treasure trove.

💜 And of course... KOOK (That’s us)

What we do: Vegan, reef-safe hair protection for saltwater dwellers. Our pre-swim hair mask locks in moisture, shields from UV and salt, and stays put for up to 8 hours even through hardcore ocean exposure.

Why we love us: Because we make products that perform and protect so you can dive in without the damage.
